Euan’s Best of 2008

OK,  So mine is somewhat different to Clauds but the Buraka and Erykah Badu almost made it into mine…

Click on the pictures to hear the best tracks from each album…

But here’s mine anyway…In no particular order

Foals – Antidotes

Oxford based art dance rock – Straight outta shoreditch baby!

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

Gorgeous lilting melodies for all you folky white boys out there

Q-Tip – The Renaissance

The Ummah does it again with his sophomore….A shining light in a poor year for HipHop

Nomo – Ghost Rock

Great Afrocentric party beats from a new face at Ubiquity

Jamie Lidell – Jim

Motown for NOW! Comes with the ‘sound of summer’ every 2 years for me….Takes me back to the festivals

Fujiya and Miyagi – Lightbulbs

A recent discovery, Brighton based chug masters update the ‘Can’ sound for the UK, 30 years on….

Karl Hector & the Malcouns – Sahara Swing

Very much echoing the Heliocentrics to me (Malcom Catto is on the Drums) but with an Arabian twist

Tawiah – In Jodies Room

THE  star of RISE festival for me,  incredible voice, someone that surely should be breaking through into the mainstream?!!?

Guilty Simpson – Ode to the Ghetto

Guilty Simpson – Or  ‘THE BIG LAD’ to me…. What a fucking album….Thugged, attitude, still got his head screwed on though….

Battles – Mirrored

A GLARING omission from my comment after Sativo’s post – HOW THE HELL COULD I FORGET THIS????

Jeeeeez….What an album – Taking in influences as far stretching as Talking Heads, Can, Goldie, Fugazi, Helmet (Former Helmet drummer takes care of the tom toms here) Argh…just fucking everything….It’s like they just mashed the section of records in my rack called ‘Miscellanious’ and stuck it in the oven and re-melted them into one behemoth of an opus.  IN – fucking – CREDIBLE.

Battles – I SALUTE YOU….

MY BEST OF 2008 LIST

Ahhh lists.. I know they are kind of played out but I felt like making this anyways. I’d be very interested to hear what you guys thought about 08.

In some particular order:

10. RADIOHEAD – IN RAINBOWS

I didn’t listen when it came out because the hype was too large. Stooopid me.

in rainbows

9. GANG GANG DANCE – SAINT DYMPHNA

Weird vocals, unpredictable rhythms and an overall tripped-out listen.

saint dymphna

8. ERYKAH BADU – NEW AMERYKAH PART ONE

So glad to see her back in form. Its all about the Madlib & Kareem beats!

new amerykah

7. EL GUINCHO – ALEGRANZA!

Tropical party mayng. And if choo don’t know now choo know, esnitches.

alegranza

6. RUBIES – EXPLODE FROM THE CENTER

Perfect sit-back-and-relax music. Harmonising chicks are the shizznit.

expolde from the center

5. LOCO DICE – 7 DUNHAM PLACE

Heavy, dubby minimal tech almost to the point of dirty house. So damn ill.

7 dunham place

4. KOUSHIK – OUT MY WINDOW

Smoked-out soundscapes from a true fan of hiphop. His drums are thick as thieves.

out my window

3. SYCLOPS – I’VE GOT MY EYE ON YOU

One of the most complex dance albums I’ve ever come across. Maurice Fulton is the don and this full-length is pure donnage.

ive got my eye on you

2. BURAKA SOM SISTEMA – BLACK DIAMOND

Huge. This entire album is full of tracks that make dancefloors go bonkers.

black diamond

1. FLYING LOTUS – LOS ANGELES

As soon as people stopped biting Dilla, they starting biting Lotus. And with good reason. This album is a classic.

los angeles

So there you have it. I’m sure I forgot something… but basically I wanted to put this together because I think that its easy to be cynical towards the state of music these days, however there are loooads of creative and talented peeps putting out some great music. That said, my prediction is that 09 will be the year of ze Platypus.

Rapture! I first couldn’t believe my eyes when my man Timo stopped at my crib on his semiyearly visit from his arboristic studies in Northern Germany to show me some new classic music he was able to lay his hands on in the past months and I saw it laying there amidst dozens of milestones of the German and mid-90’s-New-York-rapscene: the mp3-files of Dj Sepalot’s legendary third Topfhits-mixtape.

In case you remember, I already introduced him

sepalotto you in the context of my # 7-post. But while you had to buy the mix back then in order to listen to it, you can now download its predecessor for free.

The mix itself is from late 1999 and reminds me a lot of good old Dj Adlib. The same good hand in choosing the right combination of tracks, nice little Sample-interludes and now and then some decent use of the turntable. And we should not forget the rare and partly exclusive tracks from the Blumentopf-posse and Rasputin that are on it, too.

The following might also speak for the quality of this tape: My girl, who neither has a walkman nor the habit of listening to cassettes, happens to own this as well as the three subsequent volumes of the Topfhits and even after nearly three years of steady persuasion, she does not want to give them to me to add them to my collection – not even as a loan.

But enough of the smalltalk, check out the facts:

  • a01_intro
  • a02_rasco – peanut butter wolf
  • a03_sound providers

Unfortunately I don’t have the means to scan in the cover at the moment, but check out the DOWNLOAD anyway.

I hope you will like it. Peace..
